The most spectacular scenic feature along this trail system is the Gorge itself, where the Amable du Fond thunders between steep rock walls in a dramatic series of rapids and waterfalls. ![]() The Eau Claire Gorge Hike or Snowshoe the Eau Claire Gorge trails, located in the Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area. This site is truly one of the scenic gems of the Bonfield-Mattawa corridor, in the Near North Travel Area. Consisting of several loop options the Eau Claire trails take you past the scenic gorge and to a replica 'squatters' cabin, making for a great hike or snowshoe outing. The trail has an accompanying self guided tour booklet, highlighting natural, scenic and historic points along the trail. These trails would mostly be classified as 'Easy' with some moderate sections. ![]() ![]() Click here for Trail Conditions Situated, 10 km West of Mattawa or 45 km, east of North Bay, turn off Highway 17 and follow Highway 630 and the well marked signs lead you to the Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area, managed by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority.The interpretative trail, is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 mile) loop, walk it clockwise or downstream. (There is a shorter, direct center trail to the gorge which you would arrive at in minutes. Here you could return or walk the last half of the loop.)
